Knox meets, interviews Globetrotter as prize
By RELMA HARGUS rhargus@theadvocate.com Advocate staff writer
Darius Knox has seen the Harlem Globetrotters play and followed them for years, but their local visits offered something extra for the Northeast High School seventh-grader. Darius won an essay contest sponsored by The Advocate's Newspaper in Education department that included a one-on-one interview with team member Otis "O.K." Key on March 9.
Darius also received tickets to a March 20 game where the Globetrotters played the New York Nationals in an exhibition game at the Baton Rouge River Center.
Darius' ticket included a court-side seat and locker-room pass. Darius' writes about his experience in today's Kids Avenue.
Darius illustrated to adults listening to his interview with Key that the youngster knew basketball and genuinely was interested in learning about Key as a person.
He pumped Key about his role models as well as favorite professional basketball team, but they also talked basketball.
Reporters hanging around for the chance to meet Key encouraged Darius after the interview to consider journalism as a career.
See what Darius learned about Key in the accompanying sidebar.
Key also met with students at Cohn Elementary School in Port Allen during the March 9 visit. Fourth-graders at the school won a poster contest sponsored by Newspapers in Education and the Globetrotters. They received tickets to the game and a schoolwide visit with Key.
