ABC Notes: Bowling teams enjoy ride

ABC Notes: Bowling teams enjoy ride

Of the 13,222 teams scheduled to attend the 102nd ABC Tournament, only two will be able to call themselves team event champions when the Tournament concludes July 4.
For many of the remaining teams, the ABC Tournament experience is more about seeing different parts of the country, meeting new people and having a good time.

The Sturgis Roosters of Sturgis, Mich., didn't even look at the top scores before they bowled Sunday night, but knew from experience that it would take a score of at least 2,700 to make a decent landing in the Classified Team standings.

Led by Donald Cherrington, who shot 625, the Sturgis Roosters put together games of 883, 884 and 936 to move into fourth place with 2,703. Jayhawk Bowl of Marysville, Kan., leads with 2,750.

Steven Holt contributed 573, followed by Michael Stefanski (530), James Shafer (495) and Troy Andrews (480).

"We usually have one game that is really good, or one game that is really bad, but this year we were pretty consistent," said Stefanski, who has bowled with the same core group for 20 years. "We just want to have a good time, and that's usually what we're here for. We've gotten a chance to see a lot of different places, and you can't beat the camaraderie or the sportsmanship."

The Sturgis Roosters weren't the only team to move onto the leader board in Classified Team on Sunday night.

On the same squad, Rockens of Ireton, Iowa, had team games of 931, 919 and 851 to move into fifth place with 2,701. Mike Ebel led the way with 586, followed by Terry Renken (560), Chad Vlotho (556), Chet Reinking (543) and Rod Tennapel (456).

Doubles standings change

Mike Friedman of Adams, Tenn., and Mike Goode of Hopkinsville, Ky., shot 1,357 in Regular Doubles to move into fourth place Monday morning.

Friedman had games of 233, 257 and 223 for a 713 set, while Goode shot 188, 231 and 225 for a 644 series. Kevin Dornberger of Greendale, Wis., and Jeremy Sonnenfeld of Sioux Falls, S.D., lead Regular Doubles with 1,377.

Goode had 620 in team and 593 in singles for 1,857 all-events. Friedman had 560 in singles and 547 in team for 1,820 all-events.
